Apex Legends is the best new battle royale game by far, an all around improvement on what's come before. First things first: It's free-to-play, and microtransactions are cosmetic-only. Beyond that, its non-verbal communication systems are next level—you can actually cooperate with strangers who aren't using mics—and it brings character abilities into BR largely successfully. If you play PUBG or Fortnite, or couldn't get into those games but like the idea of team-based battle royale, definitely give Apex a try—you can grab it from Origin.

Meanwhile, horror fans have some good news: the Resident Evil 2 remake is excellent. In his Resident Evil 2 review, Andy calls it "a tense, challenging, and beautiful remake of a classic survival horror game, and with enough fresh ideas to make it feel excitingly new."

If you're looking to kill a rainy Sunday afternoon with a 'one more turn' obsession rather than zombies, Slay the Spire, which recently came out of Early Access, is your game. Evan explains why in his 92% review.

In the same vein, our 2018 Game of the Year, Into the Breach, is a run-based strategy game that appears simple—enemies telegraph every move they're about to make—but is a series of tactical risk-vs-reward puzzles that are deeply satisfying to solve.

Meanwhile, throwback FPS Dusk is amazing fun, and Hitman 2 has kept the PC Gamer team obsessed with the series—though clever stealth is more the game there, whereas Dusk is pure speed and strafing. If you want to slow things down for a more meditative singleplayer experience, Return of the Obra Dinn was our pick for Best Puzzle Game of 2018.
